Centella Asiatica (Cica) — The K-beauty Soother Everyone Should Own

Why centella — known as cica — is the barrier-repair ingredient every K-beauty shelf should have.

Centella asiatica is the quietest hero in Korean skincare. You will see it listed as cica, tiger grass, gotu kola, or by its four hero compounds — madecassoside, asiaticoside, madecassic acid, and asiatic acid. Whatever the label calls it, this is one of the most-studied soothing ingredients in modern dermatology, and K-beauty has been formulating with it properly for twenty years.

What it does

Centella calms inflammation, supports the skin barrier, accelerates wound healing, and reduces the appearance of redness. The four active compounds — collectively called the CICA complex or TECA — have been studied in the context of post-procedure recovery, rosacea, and sensitive skin. Good formulations concentrate the actives rather than relying on a light centella extract in water.

Who should use it

Sensitive skin. Rosacea-prone skin. Acne-prone skin. Anyone recovering from too many actives. Anyone whose barrier is compromised for any reason. I would also recommend it to every oily-skinned person because inflammation drives both sebum output and post-breakout pigmentation — centella quietly reduces both.

The best products

  • SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule — 100% centella asiatica extract, no fragrance, the cleanest take in the category.
  • SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum — the lightweight SPF-and-centella hybrid that is genuinely pleasant daily wear.
  • Purito Centella Unscented Sun — sunscreen with a centella base for sensitive skin.
  • COSRX Centella Blemish Ampule — older but still solid for spot treatment.

How to layer

Centella is friendly with almost everything. Layer it after toner and essence, before snail mucin or before a treatment serum. It does not conflict with niacinamide, BHA, or retinol — though if your skin is reacting to a stronger active, centella is the calming layer that lets you push through without quitting the active entirely.
